“This deck of playing cards was reproduced from a deck of 1888 campaign playing cards exhibited in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of History and Technology. President Grover Cleveland appears on the king of each suit and his running mate, Allen G. Thurman, on the jacks. Cleveland was elected to his first term as President in 1884 and served as the 22nd President of the Unites States from 1885 to 1889. His Vice President, Thomas A. Hendricks, died in office. In June 1888, the Democtrats renominated President Cleveland with Allen G. Thurman of Ohio as his running mate. The tariff became the main issue of the campaign; the Democrats favored revision of the tariffs, the Republican platform called for continuation of tariff and high pensions for war veterans. Although Cleveland cariied the popular vote 5.540.000 to 5.447.000, he received only 168 electoral votes and his opponent, Benjamin Harrison, won the election with 233 electoral votes. By the end of Harrison's term, many Americans were ready to return to Cleveland's harsher policies and he was re-elected 24th President in 1892. Frances Folsom, who appears on the queen of each suit, was married to President Cleveland at the age of 21, the nation's youngest first lady. Cleveland was the only President to be married in the White House.”
